Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni presented his son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, chief of the Ugandan armed forces, as a possible successor to power. He raised the prospect at a meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), his party, held in Entebbe on 27 October 2026, according to Ugandan media outlets ChimpReports and Nile Post.
According to ChimpReports, Museveni defended his son’s controversial posts on the social media platform X, saying he saw no problem with them. He also praised his patriotism, his commitment to African unity and his role in strengthening Uganda’s special forces and security services.
Several NRM officials are said to have welcomed the idea of Muhoozi succeeding his father. Hadijah Namyalo, head of the NRM president’s office, and Anita Among, former Speaker of Parliament, reportedly expressed support for Muhoozi to run for president in 2031. His supporters, organised in the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), have already begun campaigning for that election.
On 20 October, Museveni had already praised Muhoozi’s anti-corruption efforts in the Ugandan army, in an article on his military role.
