Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has urged farmers in Sheema District to develop irrigation, pasture farming and fertiliser use to increase production and fight poverty. He made the call at a ceremony honouring Interior Minister Ephraim Kamuntu, according to Watchdoguganda.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni called on farmers in Sheema District to develop irrigation, fodder crops, fertiliser use and commercial agriculture to increase production and reduce their vulnerability to drought. He was speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony held at Bugongi Town Council in Sheema District, Watchdoguganda reports.
Museveni presented the four-acre farming model, included in the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) manifesto in 1996. He recommends allocating one acre to coffee, another to fruit trees, a third to pasture and the last to food crops. Households can also supplement their income through poultry and pig farming; those living near wetlands can practise fish farming.
The president said his campaign against poverty gained momentum after he settled in Nyabushozi in 1966, where he saw the burden of subsistence agriculture and nomadic pastoralism. He also recalled developing his interest in ways to improve agricultural incomes when he was a pupil at Mbarara High School and Ntare School.
