Victoria University organised the first inter-university mental health symposium in Kampala on Saturday, bringing together students and representatives of 13 universities and one secondary school. The meeting aimed to link student peer-support networks with clinical care, according to PML Daily.
Participants called on institutions to replace occasional awareness campaigns with sustainable and coordinated support systems. Those attending included Hafswa Lukwata, the assistant commissioner for mental health at Uganda’s Ministry of Health, and Saidi Nsamba, who leads on the issue at the Ministry of Education and Sports. Faith Nakalema, Victoria University’s mental health lead, said the strong student participation showed that young people wanted to take responsibility for the issue.
