Ninety-six health facilities are under construction in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, including three projects led by Kumasi’s municipality. A breast care centre at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital will cost 2,442,959.20 cedis and is due to be completed in ten months, according to The Chronicle.

Ghana is building 96 health facilities in the Ashanti Region, regional minister Frank Amoakohene announced at the launch of construction work on a breast care centre at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, The Chronicle reports. Three of the projects are being undertaken by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly: the breast cancer centre, a paediatric clinic and a health facility in Moshie Zongo.

The breast care centre will cost 2,442,959.20 Ghanaian cedis and will be funded by the District Assemblies Common Fund. Astee Company Limited is expected to complete the work in ten months. The project will expand the hospital’s breast care unit, established in July 2004.

Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital handles nearly 1,700 suspected breast cancer cases a year. About 14% are confirmed by biopsy, and most patients present at an advanced stage, according to figures cited by The Chronicle. The minister recalled the national goal of detecting 60% of cases at an early stage, with diagnosis within 60 days and multidisciplinary care for about 80% of patients.

The chief executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, said construction of the paediatric centre was about 70% complete. He described the breast centre as one of the Assembly’s first major projects to be funded. The minister also mentioned ongoing healthcare investments in the region, including a cardiac catheterisation laboratory at Komfo Anokye and work at Sawua Regional Hospital and the medical centre of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
