A mother and her child died in Lagos after two trucks carrying 20-foot containers overturned. The victims, trapped beneath the vehicles at Mile 2, were recovered during a rescue and towing operation, according to Adebayo Taofiq, spokesman for the road authority LASTMA.

Two trucks, each carrying a 20-foot container, overturned at Mile 2, near Freeman Market in Lagos, killing a mother and her child, according to Adebayo Taofiq, spokesman for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), cited by Punch on Sunday.

The two victims were trapped beneath the vehicles and their loads. LASTMA rescue teams recovered the bodies and cleared the trucks using a crane and a tow truck. Police secured the operation and the bodies were taken to the morgue in Yaba.

The road was temporarily closed and motorists were directed to a nearby service road. LASTMA chief executive Olalekan Bakare-Oki offered his condolences to the family and called for an investigation into the cause of the crash. Checks are to include possible mechanical failures, overloading or an uneven distribution of the load, according to Taofiq.
