The Student List could win 135 to 140 of the 250 seats in Serbia’s parliament after the snap election, according to projections by Aleksandar Vučić, who acknowledged his party’s defeat. Thousands celebrated the result in Belgrade, while turnout is said to have reached 70%, a record since 1992, Africanews reports.
The Student List could win between 135 and 140 of the 250 seats in Serbia’s parliament, compared with about 105 for Aleksandar Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), according to projections announced by the Serbian president on Sunday 25 October and reported by Africanews. The estimate would give the opposition movement an absolute majority after the snap parliamentary election.
Turnout is said to have reached 70%, an unprecedented level since 1992. The student movement, which emerged after a canopy collapsed at Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, gradually spread its demonstrations across Serbia amid allegations of corruption and government failures, according to Africanews.
The vote follows Aleksandar Vučić’s acknowledgement of the Student List’s victory, announced on 25 October. The acknowledgement of the student movement’s victory sparked scenes of celebration in Belgrade, where thousands of supporters marked the end of 14 years of SNS dominance.
