Nigeria’s government plans to identify and equip Ebola treatment centres in states with designated points of entry, as 53 contacts are being monitored. It is also preparing referral mechanisms for suspected cases and assessing isolation capacity in Abuja, according to a situation report obtained by Punch.
Nigeria’s federal government plans to identify and equip Ebola treatment centres in states with designated points of entry, as 53 contacts linked to the confirmed case in the country are being monitored, Punch reports, citing an outbreak situation report.
Authorities are assessing isolation and treatment capacity at Abuja’s university teaching hospital, where needs assessment and optimisation have been completed. An infection prevention and control assessment is planned at Karu General Hospital in Abuja to measure its capacity to accommodate more people in isolation.
The plan also includes mechanisms for referring suspected cases, including transferring them from the site where they are detected to a treatment centre. Authorities want to strengthen surveillance at international points of entry and the capacity of health facilities to manage possible infections.
This preparation complements the monitoring of contacts linked to the confirmed case, following the identification of two suspected cases and 53 contacts, announced on 25 October. Nigeria identifies two suspected cases and 53 contacts as part of outbreak surveillance.
