Nigeria’s Zamfara State has stepped up Ebola screening at airports, bus stations and other entry points after a passenger with a fever of 38°C arrived. Medical teams have been deployed to quickly refer suspected cases, according to Health Commissioner Nafisa Maradun.
The Zamfara State Government in north-western Nigeria has stepped up screening for Ebola virus disease at Gusau airport, major bus stations and other entry points after a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius was detected in a passenger arriving from Saudi Arabia. The traveller, who is from Zamfara, was identified by health officials and referred for further medical assessment, Health Commissioner Nafisa Maradun said on Friday 23 October 2026, according to Daily Trust.
Medical teams have been deployed at these locations to screen travellers and quickly refer people requiring examination. The Zamfara Health Ministry has also asked public and private facilities, epidemiological surveillance officers and local health authorities to strengthen checks, report people showing symptoms or exposed to a risk, and prepare for possible suspected cases, according to Daily Trust.
The measure follows the confirmation of an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory on 20 October. Zamfara authorities are coordinating their surveillance with the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service to identify travellers requiring medical care. It extends the national strengthening of the response announced with Ebola screening at all Nigeria’s entry points, followed by an order to report any failure to carry out border checks on 24 October.
