Kano State’s disease control centre held a practical exercise to assess health workers’ preparedness for a possible Ebola outbreak. The drill simulated identifying a suspected case at an airport or border and transferring the patient to the Yar Gaya isolation centre, according to director-general Muhammad Abbas, cited by the Daily Post.
The Kano State Centre for Disease Control in Nigeria organised an exercise simulating the transfer of a suspected Ebola case to the Yar Gaya isolation centre. Its director-general, Professor Muhammad Abbas, said on Sunday that the drill aimed to prepare health workers for a possible emergency.
The exercise recreated the journey of a patient identified at an airport or border crossing in the state to the Yar Gaya centre. Abbas said that regular drills should help staff follow procedures without confusion. The state began its preventive measures after receiving information from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
Health authorities have also strengthened monitoring at major entry points, according to the state’s Health Commissioner, Labaran Yusuf. Abbas urged residents to wash their hands with soap and running water, or use sanitiser when running water is unavailable. He warned that shared water in a container could transmit germs.
Kano authorities are preparing as Nigeria is already monitoring contacts linked to the outbreak. The country has announced that it is following 53 people and paying weekly assistance of 100,000 naira as part of this monitoring, according to the national Ebola contact update.
