Algeria’s Parliament on Sunday approved the deployment of troops to Niger to protect energy facilities, paving the way for the first official deployment of Algerian soldiers abroad since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. The National People’s Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, said in a statement that its members had voted unanimously, reports Telquel.
The approval follows the authorisation announced the previous day for military units to be sent to Niger (Algeria authorises deployment of military units to Niger). The deployment of Algerian troops to protect the Kafra oil field was also reported on 25 October (Algeria deploys troops to Niger to protect the Kafra oil field).
