The two chambers of Algeria’s Parliament have summoned their members for extraordinary meetings on Sunday 25 October, with no official agenda communicated. Parliamentary sources cited by El Khabar link the sessions to military cooperation with Niger and a possible increase in Algerian aid.
The two chambers of the Algerian Parliament are due to hold extraordinary meetings on Sunday 25 October, dealing notably with military cooperation with Niger and a presidential decree on national defence, according to parliamentary sources cited by TSA and El Khabar. The People’s National Assembly will meet at 10 am and the Council of the Nation in the afternoon. Parliamentarians received brief summonses by SMS, without a detailed agenda.
The decree must be approved by a two-thirds majority in each of the two chambers to authorise the deployment of units of the People’s National Army abroad, in accordance with Article 91 of Algeria’s 2020 Constitution. Speeches by parliamentary group leaders will be limited to 20 minutes, according to the same sources.
The session follows Algeria’s dispatch of four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Niger in late August, the day after an attempted coup was thwarted. Algerian media link the summonses to the situation in the Sahel and the possibility of increased Algerian military aid to Niamey, according to TSA.
