Algeria to fund 1,080 km of railway to Tamanrasset

Algeria’s Ministry of Public Works says the railway line to Tamanrasset has two funding arrangements: the African Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank are financing the 495 km between Laghouat, Ghardaïa and El Menea, while the state is funding the next 1,080 km to Tamanrasset. The ministry says the details correct inaccurate reports about funding being abandoned, according to its statement of 21 October.

The 1,080-kilometre railway section between El Menea, Aïn Salah and Tamanrasset will be financed entirely from the Algerian state budget, the Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure said in a statement issued on Wednesday 21 October. The ministry said the railway project to Tamanrasset was divided into two sections with distinct funding arrangements.

The first section, 495 kilometres long, between Laghouat, Ghardaïa and El Menea, is financed by the African Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The ministry said consultations between the Islamic Development Bank and the African Development Bank were continuing on financing other priority sections.

The African Development Bank approved a $878 million package in July for the Laghouat-Ghardaïa-El Menea section, following an initial tranche of €747 million announced in December 2025. The Algerian government considered the southern railway project on 21 October, according to the report of its meeting, which focused in particular on industry and the fight against drug trafficking.
