Germany has offered to mediate in the security crisis between DR Congo and Rwanda, Serap Güler said during a meeting with Félix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa. The German deputy foreign minister also said Kigali’s concerns did not justify a violation of international law, according to Beto.
Germany offered on Saturday 24 October to mediate between Kinshasa and Kigali in the security crisis destabilising the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). Germany’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Serap Güler, made the offer during a meeting with Congolese President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo in Kinshasa, according to the news outlet Beto.
Berlin wants to relay messages between the parties and contribute to peace efforts led by the United States and Qatar. Serap Güler also said Rwanda’s security concerns could not justify an infringement of DR Congo’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as Kinshasa accuses Kigali of giving military support to the AFC/M23 in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, according to Beto.
The German proposal comes after the African Union’s consultations with Félix Tshisekedi and the AFC/M23 on 11 October as part of the Congolese crisis. It follows the African Union consultations with the parties to the conflict.
