Tshisekedi says DR Congo security situation is under control

President Félix Tshisekedi assured Sacred Union deputies and senators that the security situation was under control, as Joseph Kabila now leads the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation formed from the AFC/M23. He also accused his predecessor and Rwanda of fuelling the aggression, according to Actualité.cd.

Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi assured deputies and senators from the Sacred Union on Saturday 24 October that the security situation was «under control at all levels». He asked them to reassure the population and remain committed to the Republic and national unity, ahead of the national dialogue, according to Actualité.cd.

Félix Tshisekedi accused his predecessor Joseph Kabila of joining the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), formed from the AFC/M23, to give a «Congolese appearance» to the aggression which, he said, was being conducted from abroad. He also said that Congolese sanctions and military pressure had «asphyxiated Kigali», while acknowledging the continued presence of infiltrators within the army, reports Actualité.cd.

The head of state asked elected representatives to explain to their voters that, in his view, the national dialogue aims to return the country to a degree of normality and not to keep him in power. He nevertheless said that the majority could decide to amend the Constitution and that he would step down in 2028 if it refused to do so, according to a person present at the meeting.

Félix Tshisekedi is due to appoint next week the leaders of the dialogue, the national and provincial coordinators, and the supervisors for each province. Two African Union co-facilitators, a man and a woman, are due to support the work. The announcement comes after several positions were expressed on Joseph Kabila’s joining the FRN, notably Germain Kambinga’s call to support Tshisekedi against Kabila’s front on 15 October, and Patrick Muyaya’s request for the opposition to clarify its position on Kabila on 19 October.
