The commander of the Congolese Republican Guard, Major General Kabi Kiriza Ephraïm, warned that public anger would turn against Joseph Kabila, who has become head of the Front pour la refondation de la nation (FRN), a political and military movement that succeeded the AFC/M23 rebellion. He was speaking before more than 5,000 soldiers on Friday 23 October at the Place de la Loyauté at Colonel Tshatshi Camp in Kinshasa, according to the communication service of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), cited by Actualité.cd.
The head of the Republican Guard denounced the former president’s involvement in a rebel movement and reaffirmed his unit’s determination to protect President Félix Tshisekedi. He also accused political leaders of spreading messages on social media and television aimed at discrediting the Republican Guard, according to the FARDC.
The statement comes after Joseph Kabila took charge of the FRN on 12 October. It is part of a series of hostile reactions to the movement, including denunciation by the Congolese presidential camp on 15 October.
