Tshopo universities join march against Kabila rebellion

Leaders of Tshopo’s universities, led by rector Matthieu Kirongozi Bometa, confirmed their participation in Saturday’s march in Kisangani against the rebellion attributed to Joseph Kabila. They called on students and staff to join the mobilisation, according to Kis24, after a meeting with Governor Paulin Lendongolia.

Leaders of higher and university education institutions in Tshopo confirmed their participation in the march planned for Saturday 24 October in Kisangani against the rebellion attributed to former president Joseph Kabila. Meeting Provincial Governor Paulin Lendongolia on Thursday, they called on students and university staff to join the mobilisation, according to Kis24.

The discussions focused on the security situation and measures to protect the population, as well as organising the university community’s participation, Matthieu Kirongozi Bometa, chairman of the Conference of Heads of Institutions of Tshopo and rector of the University of Kisangani, said. The delegation included rectors and directors-general, among others.

Paulin Lendongolia presented the march as a way of informing international public opinion of Congolese people’s commitment to democracy and respect for the constitutional order. The governor also condemned the use of weapons to seize power and disputed claims attributed to Joseph Kabila about President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo’s popularity and the governance of the country, according to Kis24.

The university mobilisation follows the Tshopo governor’s call on 22 October to reject Kabila’s rebellion, in a previous statement, and his appeal to the people of Kisangani on 18 October to take part in protests against Kabila’s rebellion.
