FRN clashes with government forces in Kaziba

Government forces and the Wazalendo militias supporting them clashed with fighters from the National Reconstruction Front (FRN) around Kaziba, in South Kivu. The clashes follow the creation of the political-military movement led by Joseph Kabila, according to security analyses published on 21 October.

Government forces and allied Wazalendo militias clashed with fighters from the National Reconstruction Front (FRN) near Kaziba, in South Kivu, DR Congo. The clashes prompted thousands of families to flee, according to security analyses published on 21 October by Bamada.net.

The FRN is a new political-military coalition led by former Congolese president Joseph Kabila. It includes former members of the Congo River Alliance and the March 23 Movement (M23), with Sultani Makenga as military commander, according to Bamada.net.

The fighting follows the announcement in Goma on 12 October of the creation of the FRN, which says it wants to bring together nationwide forces opposed to President Félix Tshisekedi and does not rule out taking up arms. The announcement was followed by Joseph Kabila taking charge of the FRN on 12 October, then the unveiling of a new armed coalition against Félix Tshisekedi on 13 October.
