The former president of the Senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, was arrested on 23 October in Kinshasa, where more than 30 soldiers were reportedly deployed. Congolese opposition politician Salomon Kalonda has condemned the arrest of former Senate president Alexis Thambwe Mwamba, who was detained on 23 October in Kinshasa. He described the arrest as “arbitrary” and an “abject provocation” in a statement published on the social network X, according to the Gabonese Press Agency (AGP), citing Radio France Internationale.
Salomon Kalonda also denounced the detention of a man aged over 80, presented as a major figure in the political life of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He accused the authorities of prioritising repression when the country would need political de-escalation, and linked it to the referendum law, which he accused of seeking to facilitate a revision of the Constitution.
Salomon Kalonda’s reaction came the day after Alexis Thambwe Mwamba’s arrest in Kinshasa, announced on 23 October. It also came after the arrest by Congolese justice authorities of a senior member of the UDPS on the same day, following calls for violence.
