Africa CDC will bring together African health ministers on 28 October 2026 to coordinate the response to the Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo virus. Declared a continental emergency in May, the outbreak is reported to have reached the DR Congo, Kenya and Nigeria, according to an organisation statement published on 21 October.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) will hold a virtual meeting of African health ministers on 28 October 2026 to coordinate the response to the Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo virus. The meeting will focus on the epidemiological situation, cooperation between the countries concerned and measures to contain the spread, according to 24heureinfo.
Declared a continental public health emergency in May 2026, the outbreak has spread from the DR Congo to Kenya and Nigeria, according to 24heureinfo. Africa CDC is calling on states to strengthen health surveillance and coordination of their national responses.
The meeting is intended to prepare a summit of heads of state and government under the leadership of Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, the current chairperson of the African Union. Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said Ebola was crossing borders and that the response needed to be faster and better coordinated.
The meeting announced for 28 October follows the start on 23 October of the Tumaini Ebola vaccine clinical trial in the DR Congo, followed by the publication on 24 October of an update reporting that two centres remained closed in Alimbongo.
