Teodoro Obiang’s regime is threatening legal action against Africa 24 and its director general Constant Nemale after the announcement of programmes critical of Equatorial Guinea. Malabo is demanding that the programmes stop, a right of reply and a correction, while also claiming ownership of the channel, according to the regime’s statement dated 22 October 2026.
The regime of Equatorial Guinean President Teodoro Obiang is threatening to take Africa 24 and its director general, Cameroonian Constant Nemale, to court after the announcement of programmes critical of the authorities. In a motion dated 22 October, Malabo demanded that the programmes be stopped, a right of reply under the same conditions and a public correction, Radio Macuto reports.
The regime also says it has begun steps to “recover” the channel and accuses Constant Nemale of defrauding the state during its creation and financing. It maintains that Equatorial Guinea fully financed Africa 24, while claiming intellectual property ownership of the project for Teodoro Obiang, with the president presented as its designer and financier. Radio Macuto notes that the motion specifies neither the jurisdiction nor the date or amount of any potential penalty mentioned by Malabo.
The motion responds to statements broadcast on Africa 24 saying that Equatorial Guinea was not a genuine democracy, that the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea dominated political life, and that the country suffered from an image deficit linked to Teodoro Obiang’s longevity in power since 1979 and the concentration of powers. It comes after Malabo demanded that Africa 24 content be stopped and a public correction on 24 October.
