Equatorial Guinea has been designated to chair the United Nations Statistical Commission for Africa (Statcom-Africa) during the 2026–2028 term, the Equatorial Guinean media outlet Realequatorialguinea reports. Ricardo Nsue Ndemesogo Obono, director-general of Equatorial Guinea’s National Institute of Statistics (INEGE), is chairing the proceedings of the tenth session, held from 19 to 23 October in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The session brings together officials from national statistics institutes, pan-African institutions, development partners and statistical training organisations. It focuses on the theme “Unlocking the value of data in Africa” and examines ways to use data to support the continent’s development, according to Realequatorialguinea.
In his address, Ricardo Nsue Ndemesogo Obono said reliable data are necessary to measure progress, identify inequalities and guide public policies. He called for national statistical systems to be strengthened and for administrative data, censuses and geospatial information to be better integrated.
The INEGE director-general also advocated harmonised statistical methods at regional level, as well as better data protection and the financial sustainability of statistical bodies. These priorities are intended in particular to support the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
