The WHO says Nigeria no longer has any Ebola cases after the patient and her husband, both Swiss citizens, were evacuated to Switzerland. The country will continue to monitor 52 contacts, while the patient will be cared for in Switzerland, according to WHO Regional Director for Africa Mohamed Janabi.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says there are currently no Ebola cases in Nigeria after the infected patient and her husband were evacuated to Switzerland on Monday morning. WHO Regional Director for Africa Mohamed Janabi announced this on his X account.
Nigeria will continue to monitor 52 contacts, while Switzerland will care for the patient and monitor her husband, the 53rd contact. According to Janabi, the patient was clinically stable after passing through the acute phase of the disease with care from Nigerian medical teams.
Nigeria’s Health Minister, Muhammad Pate, said the patient was conscious and communicating, and that her laboratory results were approaching normal values. He stressed, however, that she could still be infectious and that strict protocols remained in place.
The evacuation follows the preparation for a transfer abroad announced by Nigerian authorities on 26 October, after the WHO described the outbreak as more complex on 22 October. Nigeria prepares to evacuate its patient abroad.
