Nigerian Ebola patient evacuated to Switzerland

The Nigerian Ebola patient, whose condition has improved significantly, has been evacuated to Switzerland for treatment, Health Minister Ali Pate said. She left Abuja on Monday with her spouse, while authorities are maintaining public health measures because she may still be contagious, according to the minister.

The Nigerian Ebola patient has been evacuated to Switzerland for treatment, Health Minister Ali Pate announced on Monday 26 October. Her spouse, who has no symptoms, accompanied her.

Before leaving Abuja, the patient was stable, conscious and able to communicate. Her test results were approaching their reference levels, the minister said, adding that her clinical condition had improved significantly. However, he warned that this improvement did not mean she was no longer contagious, stressing that strict health protocols remained in force.

Ali Pate praised the medical staff who treated the patient and the public health officials who coordinated the evacuation. He said public health measures were continuing to contain the virus and urged the public to remain vigilant and seek information from reliable sources.

The evacuation follows Nigeria’s announcement on 26 October of plans to transfer the patient abroad, and subsequent reports that she had left on a medical aircraft. It adds to previous announcements about the evacuation abroad of Nigeria’s first Ebola patient.
