The FBI arrested nine cybercrime suspects in Nigeria and seized 53 electronic devices during an operation targeting networks involved in online fraud, its director, Kash Patel, said in a post published on his X account on Sunday 25 October and reported by Punch. The operation also identified $11 million in funds that could be frozen in several countries.
Named ‘Operation Blackout’, the operation targeted transnational networks that allegedly preyed on US victims through scam centres. Kash Patel praised the cooperation of Nigerian law enforcement and partners in London. He said the United States would pursue those involved in cybercrime wherever they operated.
The operation follows the arrest of two suspects in Nigeria over a $2.4 million fraud, announced on 22 October as part of an investigation led by Interpol. The two announcements concern separate operations against online fraud.
