The UN is urging Liberia to build on more than twenty years of peace by strengthening women’s participation, young people’s employment and education prospects, and health services. These priorities were presented at a joint press briefing with the government on 23 October in Monrovia, ahead of United Nations Day, according to The Liberian Investigator.
The United Nations has called on Liberia to strengthen youth employment and education, women’s participation in national development and the delivery of health services. The recommendations were made at a joint government-UN press briefing held on 23 October in Monrovia, according to The Liberian Investigator.
The meeting was held ahead of the United Nations Day celebration, scheduled to take place at Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the theme “Liberia on the UN Security Council: from peacebuilding at home to promoting peace and security around the world”. Christine N. Umutoni, the UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, said the country’s more than twenty years of peace justified its participation in international decisions on peace and security.
Liberia is due to assume the presidency of the UN Security Council. Christine Umutoni described this responsibility as an opportunity for the government to set its diplomatic priorities while making an African voice heard. It comes after Liberia and Sierra Leone strengthened health cooperation, announced on 15 October.
