Oswald Baboke, deputy director of the civil cabinet of Cameroon’s presidency and a favourite for the vice-presidency, relies on family, political and religious networks. Named in two investigations into a fake appointment decree and alleged gold trafficking, he denies any involvement, according to Camer.
Oswald Baboke, deputy director of the civil cabinet of Cameroon’s presidency and an evangelical pastor, is among the favourites for the post of vice-president, vacant since the constitutional revision of April 2026. He is named in two investigations ordered by President Paul Biya, one of which concerns a fake decree announcing the appointment of a vice-president, Camer reports.
On 12 June 2026, a man presented Cameroon Radio Television (CRTV), the country’s public broadcaster, with a document bearing the presidential seal and announcing the appointment. Its director-general, Charles Ndongo, checked the document with Samuel Mvondo Ayolo, director of the civil cabinet: the decree was fake and had not been signed by Paul Biya. Investigators nevertheless established that the official seals were authentic and that the signature resembled the president’s. An intelligence report described the case as an “attempted coup”.
The investigation, entrusted to the Directorate of Presidential Security and overseen by Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, secretary-general of the presidency, examined the president’s circle. According to documents seized, Baboke’s name appeared on the original decree. He denies any involvement and denounces a conspiracy.
