The Nigeria Democratic Congress has dropped Mohammed Bunu, its candidate for the Borno State House of Assembly, over alleged activities contrary to the party line. A letter dated 25 October 2026 accuses him of campaigning for Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the African Democratic Congress, and says disciplinary proceedings began in his Hausari ward, according to the Daily Trust.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a Nigerian party, has withdrawn Mohammed Bunu’s nomination as its candidate for the Borno State House of Assembly, accusing him of campaigning for Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), according to a party letter dated 25 October 2026. The letter, signed by the NDC’s deputy chairman in the state, Umar Fema, describes the alleged acts as a breach of the party’s rules and discipline.
The case concerns campaign materials displaying the ADC logo, the slogan “Sabon Tafiya, Sabon Salo” and the names and photographs of Atiku Abubakar and Mohammed Bunu. The NDC says this association raises questions about its candidate’s loyalty.
Disciplinary proceedings began in the Hausari ward. Bunu was summoned on 23 October, and again on 24 October, before an investigative panel of the Maiduguri metropolitan constituency committee, but did not attend either hearing. The state leadership subsequently approved his removal from the party’s list of candidates.
The NDC ordered him to stop presenting himself as its candidate or authorised representative. The letter nevertheless distinguishes this decision from his possible expulsion from the party, which must be dealt with in separate proceedings. The disciplinary decision comes after the NDC entrusted its 2027 campaign to Henry Dickson and Peter Obi on 25 October. The NDC’s 2027 campaign had thus been organised by the party the day before the announcement concerning Bunu.
