An electric fence has been installed around a large billboard showing Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, according to a video that went viral on the social network X and was reported by the Daily Post. The installation prompted mixed reactions over the protection of political displays from vandalism.
Several users felt that the fence contradicted the function of a billboard intended to address the public. Dare-tomo asked why a billboard needed to be protected from the people it was intended for, while Tosyn accused opposition supporters of attacking campaign displays.
Other internet users interpreted the measure as a sign of declining support for the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party. Abiola Oshodi said that an electric fence around the images of the president and a governor called their legitimacy into question, while Emmanuel felt that a high-performing government should not need exceptional measures to protect its image.
The reactions came after several debates about Bola Tinubu’s popularity, including opposition criticism over the cost-of-living crisis.
