The Nigerian army has accused police officers of failing to cooperate with its soldiers during an intervention in Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State. The joint task force Operation Enduring Peace said it had deployed troops after reports of gunfire and the death of a resident, in a statement issued on Monday.
According to the force’s spokesperson, Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, soldiers were alerted on 20 October to sporadic gunfire in Mai Farin Moto, Maraban Dere and neighbouring communities. A resident, identified as Adamu Suleiman, was also reportedly killed. Troops from Sector 3 were deployed to investigate, prevent further violence and protect residents.
The task force said tensions arose when soldiers tried to coordinate their intervention with police officers already present. It said the incident was being examined through military command and inter-agency cooperation channels to establish the facts and prevent a recurrence. The army rejected the suggestion that its soldiers had acted outside their responsibilities and urged the public not to circulate unverified information.
