Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni inaugurated a military mechanised repair workshop valued at 53 million dollars on Thursday 22 October in Magamaga, in Jinja District. The facility was developed as part of defence cooperation between Uganda and Russia, according to Nile Post.
The programme also included a digital training room dedicated to BRDM-2MS armoured reconnaissance vehicles, as well as maritime security facilities in Entebbe: eight boats, a surveillance radar, a floating dock, workshops, firefighting equipment, specialised vehicles and an ambulance. These resources are intended to strengthen surveillance of Ugandan waters and the operational readiness of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, of which Museveni is commander-in-chief, Nile Post reports.
During his visit to the school of the 154th Marine Battalion, the head of state asked the army to make greater use of artificial intelligence, automation and new technologies. The inauguration programme took place on 21 and 22 October, with a Russian delegation led by Lieutenant-General Aleksandr Kshimovskii.
The modernisation comes after 280 officers graduated from the Ugandan military academy on 21 October. It also follows Museveni’s statements on Muhoozi’s anti-corruption drive in the Ugandan army, published on 20 October.
