Mozambican President Daniel Chapo calls on African countries to strengthen cooperation against terrorism and better protect their natural resources. He also calls for greater African participation in the United Nations Security Council’s ongoing discussions, according to O País.
Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Saturday called on African countries to strengthen their unity and international cooperation against terrorism, at the 12th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, in Ethiopia. He said security was an essential condition for development, according to the Mozambican media outlet Opais.
Daniel Chapo linked the discovery of natural gas in Mozambique to the emergence of terrorism in the country. “At the same time as we discovered gas, terrorism appeared. That is one coincidence too many,” he said, calling for joint African action to protect natural resources, Opais reported.
The Mozambican head of state also called for a review of the global security architecture, with greater African participation in the United Nations Security Council’s ongoing debates. He said the continent’s absence from this forum made it more difficult to resolve internal conflicts and called for multilateral organisations to be strengthened, as multilateralism is, in his view, being challenged.
Daniel Chapo cited Mozambique’s cooperation with the Southern African Development Community, Rwanda and Tanzania in the fight against violent extremism. His call comes after he sought Brazilian capital to develop Mozambican gas, announced on 21 September 2026 in the search for Brazilian capital for Mozambican gas.
