General Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced on social media that retired Ugandan Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu had been demoted to private. The announcement, which symbolically overturns the military hierarchy, was made by Muhoozi, the head of Uganda’s armed forces.

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced on social media that Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu, a former senior officer in the Ugandan army, had been stripped of his ranks and demoted to private. Muhoozi Kainerugaba called him a “traitor” in his post, Rwanda Dispatch reports.

The announcement follows several public statements by Muhoozi Kainerugaba on the Ugandan army and political life. President Yoweri Museveni recently praised his anti-corruption efforts in the army, while the general later unveiled a seven-point political programme.
