Kenya’s opposition coalition is aiming to announce its candidate for the 2027 presidential election on 25 December, said Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya. The deadline comes as several member parties launch separate campaigns, according to Citizen TV, cited by Tuko.
Kenya’s opposition coalition is aiming to announce its candidate for the 2027 presidential election on 25 December, Eugene Wamalwa, leader of the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K), told Citizen TV. He was speaking on 26 October after a delegation met Rigathi Gachagua, Kenya’s former deputy president and leader of the DCP party.
Wamalwa said consultations among the coalition parties had advanced enough for them to consider a timetable for a decision. Several officials are nevertheless calling for an earlier announcement. Justin Muturi, leader of the Democratic Party, has called in particular for immediate support for Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front.
Gachagua advocates a more cautious approach. He believes an early nomination would expose the candidate to pressure and interference from President William Ruto’s administration. The DCP leader cited the 2002 election as a precedent, according to Tuko.
The proposed timetable comes as Kalonzo Musyoka called on the opposition to unite on 25 October. The next day, Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka were negotiating opposition unity.
