Gabon officially launches its 5G networks

Gabon has officially launched its 5G networks in Libreville, with the rollout assigned to operators Airtel Gabon and Libertis following ARCEP’s favourable opinion. Coverage is expected to extend gradually to Port-Gentil and then the rest of the country, requiring major investment, reports the Gabonese Press Agency.

Gabon officially launched its 5G mobile networks in Libreville on Monday 26 October. The Gabonese Press Agency (AGP), which witnessed the ceremony, reports that operators Airtel Gabon and Libertis will be able to roll out the technology after the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP) gave a favourable opinion on the allocation of frequencies.

The rollout, which the government and ARCEP have been working on for more than a year, will take place gradually. An official said that masts were being deployed in Greater Libreville and Port-Gentil, before coverage is extended across the country. ARCEP Director General Célestin Kadjidja described the ceremony as the culmination of this preparatory work.

Airtel Gabon Director General Thomas Herbert Gutjahr highlighted the expected social and economic benefits of 5G, particularly for learning, businesses and opportunities for young people. Moov Africa Gabon Télécom also called for this development to be approached with ambition.
