A joint general and administrative police tour was conducted in the commune of Ambodimadiro, in Ambanja district, to strengthen enforcement of rules protecting natural resources. The initiative is part of the GEC BATAN project, which focuses on managing the ecosystems of Ambaro Bay, Tsimipaika, Ampasindava and the Nosy Be archipelagos, Lexpress reports.
The missions aim to inform residents about laws, decrees, orders, approved Dina customary rules and resource management transfer contracts, and to explain their rights, obligations and the applicable penalties. They are also intended to identify offences such as illegal logging, charcoal production, illegal exploitation of mangroves, destructive fishing and the use of prohibited nets.
Local administrative and judicial authorities took part in the meeting with the population. The project also seeks to identify the causes of poor enforcement of the rules, institutional obstacles and coordination difficulties between services. Conflicts over resource use and problems related to natural resource management contracts are among the difficulties observed in the field.
