Kenyan police rescued 59 migrants suspected of being trafficking victims during an operation on Saturday in Marsabit County, according to the county police commander, Leonard Kimaiyo. The people rescued were 54 Eritrean nationals and five Ethiopians.
Police first found 30 people — 23 men and seven women — in a house in Majengo village, in Marsabit town. A second operation at a farm in the Segel area found 29 more people, including a four-year-old child. The operation was launched after intelligence indicated that they were present at the two locations, reports Citizen.
A guard at a house in Majengo was arrested. The migrants are suspected of having entered the county through unofficial routes, and police are investigating their transport as well as possible accomplices. They are awaiting a court appearance.
