Uganda has deployed soldiers and police to Busia after Tusker Ofubo, a reservist in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, was stabbed during a dispute with a hawker. Authorities fear the suspect, whom residents allegedly helped to escape, may have crossed the border into Kenya, reports the Daily Monitor.
Uganda has deployed soldiers and police near its border with Kenya, in Busia, after the murder of a reservist from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), according to the Ugandan newspaper Daily Monitor, cited by Tuko. Tusker Ofubo, assigned to the Busia municipal council, was stabbed on Friday 23 October during a trade enforcement operation.
The head of municipal enforcement, George Wandera, explained that the reinforcements were intended to support enforcement operations, as some traders operating in unauthorised areas are suspected of being armed. Police are searching for a Maasai hawker accused of stabbing Ofubo after his phone chargers were confiscated.
Witnesses cited by Daily Monitor said the suspect struck the reservist about five times with a long knife before fleeing on a motorcycle taxi. A colleague reportedly briefly detained him, but a crowd freed him, raising fears that he had crossed into Kenya. No temporary border closure has been mentioned.
