Tanzanian opposition party CHADEMA is asking Kenyan President William Ruto to intervene after the alleged abduction of its member and activist Twaha Mwaipaya in Machakos County, Kenya. In a statement reported by Citizen, the party called for urgent measures to find him and ensure his safe return.
Mwaipaya was allegedly abducted on Sunday at about 2pm while travelling in a taxi to visit friends. Amnesty International Kenya and the Defenders Coalition said those involved were travelling in three vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser. They had not identified those responsible or located the activist by Sunday evening.
CHADEMA also called on the Kenyan authorities to investigate, protect Mwaipaya and hold those responsible to account. The party says abductions and intimidation targeting its members threaten citizens’ safety and political rights.
CHADEMA’s appeal follows several reports that Mwaipaya had gone missing in Kenya. The Tanzanian activist was reported missing on 25 October, according to the first report, and was still unaccounted for the following day, according to the information on 26 October.
