Kenyan President William Ruto has begun a four-day tour of Ukambani, promising public projects to residents regardless of their political affiliation. He notably announced the start of paving work on the road leading to Kalonzo Musyoka’s rural home, according to Citizen.
Kenyan President William Ruto promised on Saturday to launch work on Monday to pave the road leading to the rural residence of Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the opposition Wiper party, in Tseikuru. He was speaking at Mbiuni market in Machakos County, at the start of a four-day tour of the Ukambani region, the Kenyan daily The Citizen reports.
Ruto said that people in Ukambani would receive public services and development projects regardless of their political affiliations. He nevertheless accused Kalonzo Musyoka of holding back the region’s development and denounced policies based on ethnic identity. The president also defended the Social Health Authority (SHA), the public health insurance programme, saying it was easing households’ medical expenses.
During the tour, Ruto handed over 6,000 title deeds to residents of Kaiti, in Makueni County. He is seeking to strengthen his support in a region where Kalonzo Musyoka has long had political influence, ahead of the 2027 general election.
The promise came after Ruto called Kalonzo Musyoka a friend in an article published on 24 October about relations between the two Kenyan leaders. In July, during a religious service in Kitui, the president had already offered to work with the Wiper leader.
