Rain is expected to begin on Sunday 25 October, particularly along the coast, in the highlands and parts of Nairobi, according to Tuko.
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has placed more than 40 counties on alert for moderate to heavy rain and a risk of flash floods from Sunday 25 October. Rainfall could exceed 20 millimetres in 24 hours, while winds are expected to exceed 25 knots in several regions, according to the KMD.
The alert covers coastal areas, the north-east, the highlands west and east of the Rift Valley, the central highlands and parts of the south-east. Siaya, Kisumu, Mombasa, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu and Makueni are among the counties concerned, according to official forecasts reported by Tuko.
The KMD warned that water could reach areas far from the heaviest rainfall, particularly low-lying and downstream areas. Residents were urged to beware of flash floods, poor visibility and lightning, including by avoiding shelter under trees or near windows fitted with bars. The cumulative forecast covers the period from 9 am on 25 October to 9 am on 1 November.
The alert follows heavy rain expected in several Kenyan counties, reported on 24 October, and an alert over heavy rain and strong winds published on 25 October.
