Kenya’s meteorological department has issued an alert for moderate to heavy rain and strong winds in several regions of the country. Rainfall of more than 20 millimetres in 24 hours is expected along the coast, in the north-east, the highlands and some areas of Nairobi, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.

South to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots, or around 12.5 metres per second, could accompany the rain, particularly in coastal, eastern and northern regions. The affected counties include Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Isiolo, as well as several counties in the west, the Rift Valley and the central highlands.

Kenya’s meteorological service warned that these conditions could cause flash floods and reduce visibility. It advised motorists to exercise caution, particularly in areas prone to flooding, and residents to follow weather bulletins during the short-rains season from October to December.
