Strong gusts tore the roofs off four classrooms at Murama Primary School in Kayonza District, Rwanda. No one was injured, but parents are calling for rapid action to prevent classes from being disrupted, according to residents quoted by Imvahonshya.

A severe storm destroyed the roofs of four classrooms at Murama Primary School in Kayonza District, Rwanda, on Saturday 24 October. No pupils were injured because the school was empty when the damage occurred, reports Imvahonshya.

Residents described particularly violent winds that came after signs of a storm, when it was no longer raining. The four affected classrooms represent 25% of the school’s 16 classrooms, and their roofs were blown away, with some being thrown far from the buildings.

The mayor of Kayonza, Hategekimana Fred, said the authorities were seeking temporary premises and considering grouping pupils from some classes together during repairs. Officials tasked with assessing the damage were sent to the site, while parents called for rapid action to prevent disruption to schooling.
