Air strikes attributed to the Sudanese army have killed at least 20 people and injured dozens more in Nyala, capital of South Darfur, including members of the Rapid Support Forces. A night market and several sites were targeted on Monday evening, according to a resident cited by Sudan Tribune.
At least 20 people were killed and dozens of others injured in air strikes carried out on Monday evening against two sites in Nyala, capital of South Darfur, Sudan Tribune reports, citing a local source. The strikes hit, among other places, the night market at Tangoj station in the Dumaïa district, where residents and recruits from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a Sudanese paramilitary group, were present.
The strikes, carried out by drones probably linked to the Sudanese army, are part of an intensification of air operations against Nyala over roughly the past week. Military sources cited by Sudan Tribune say the army aims to weaken the RSF’s defensive and offensive capabilities in Darfur and Kordofan ahead of a ground offensive.
Previous operations destroyed the RSF command and control centre as well as the headquarters of its civilian administration. They also targeted the homes of paramilitary leaders and air defence systems near Nyala International Airport, the Sudanese media outlet reports.
The latest strike comes after the destruction of paramilitary command centres in Nyala, reported on 27 October. A drone attack on the Nyala market was also reported on the same day.
