Bulgaria’s presidential election will go to a run-off between pro-Western reformist Andrey Gyurov and incumbent president Iliana Yotova after a historically low turnout. The final vote is scheduled for 1 November, amid political distrust and tensions linked to the war in Ukraine, according to election authorities.
Bulgaria’s presidential run-off will pit pro-Western reformist candidate Andrey Gyurov against incumbent left-wing president Iliana Yotova on 1 November, according to election officials. Sunday’s vote did not produce a winner.
Turnout reached a historic low, a phenomenon observers attribute to distrust of political leaders and voter apathy. The campaign took place amid economic difficulties and security concerns over drone attacks on commercial ships in the Black Sea.
The vote is the first major electoral test for Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria party, following its victory in the April parliamentary election. The presidential race also brought divisions over Bulgaria’s future relations with Russia to the fore, as the country is a member of the European Union and Nato.
