Jordan has struck positions described as terrorist in southern Syria, killing at least six people, including three children and a woman, according to Syrian authorities. The response follows an attack on a Jordanian church that killed nine, AFP reports.
The Jordanian army carried out air strikes in southern Syria on Monday 26 October, killing at least six people, according to health authorities in Daraa province and the Syrian Civil Defence. Amman said it was targeting “terrorist” positions after Friday’s deadly attack on a church in Jordan.
Syrian authorities said three children and a woman were among the six people killed in Daraa. The Civil Defence also reported that a man was killed in another strike in neighbouring Suweida province. Damascus denounced the lack of prior coordination with Syria.
Following the strikes, the Syrian border and customs authority closed the Nassib-Jaber crossing, suspending the movement of passengers and goods in both directions. The attack on St George’s Church in the Jordanian village of Hammoud killed nine people and wounded 25. Jordanian authorities announced on Monday that the three suspects had been arrested.
Jordan’s response follows the attack on St George’s Church, which took place on Friday during a funeral. Gunmen opened fire before fleeing.
