The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) will end its operations on 31 October, at the end of a two-year transition period, in accordance with Security Council resolutions and at the request of the Somali federal government, according to the UN. The closure will mark the end of more than 30 years of UN operations in the country.
UNTMIS’s responsibilities have been transferred to Somali institutions and to UN agencies, funds and programmes, following a roadmap agreed between Mogadishu and the UN. The organisation will continue its support for Somalia in partnership with the authorities, the African Union and other international actors.
The UN Secretary-General welcomed progress on peace and security, while calling for sustained international support in the face of political, security, humanitarian and development challenges. He particularly highlighted the need to continue support against the threat posed by Al-Shabaab to enable a gradual and sustainable security transition.
