The Nigerian army has killed eight suspects and freed three abducted people in operations in Katsina, Kaduna and Zamfara states. Captain Tamuno Sinivie, spokesperson for the North-West Joint Task Force, announced the results on Monday in a statement sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
In Katsina, soldiers killed two suspects on 24 October after responding to a call from farmers reporting terrorist activity near Machika Dam, in the Sabuwa area. They freed Suleiman Umar, 42, and recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and a motorcycle. The same day, in Kaduna State, six suspects were killed after soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force foiled an ambush near Ungwan Iya. The gunmen were being sought after abducting two people in Ungwan Mallami village.
In Zamfara State, two hostages, Shehu Chete, 40, and Bugu Bedi, 25, were rescued on Sunday in Bagega, in the Anka area. According to Sinivie, suspects fled as the soldiers arrived, abandoning the two men. They received treatment at a local clinic before being taken to a military base. The operations also recovered three locally made weapons, two more motorcycles, machetes and amulets.
The operations are part of a series of recent army actions against armed groups and kidnappings. On 26 October, the Nigerian army announced the deaths of 16 ISWAP fighters at Lake Chad, while a report on eight suspects killed and three hostages freed in Nigeria was also published that day.
