Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has approved the distribution of 500,000 solar lamps to rural households in south-east Nigeria, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu announced at the launch of an electricity equipment programme in the Bende federal constituency.
In this constituency in Abia State, 42,000 households are being targeted. The first 10,000 lamps are to be delivered within two weeks of the launch, Kalu said. An initial batch of 1,000 lamps was used as a test, according to the lawmaker.
The ceremony also marked the handover of 26 33 kVA transformers and 10,000 solar lamps and fans to communities in Bende. Some residents had been without electricity for two years after their transformer broke down, a parliamentary official quoted by Leadership said.
Solar Systems Nigeria, the company in charge of the project, said it also includes training and support initiatives for young people. The member representing Bende South in the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Ndubuisi, welcomed the initiative.
