Two children die in separate incidents in Bauchi; two suspects arrested

Police in Nigeria’s Bauchi State have arrested two suspects after two children died in separate incidents in Alkaleri and Ganjuwa. A boy died on 24 October after spending eight days in hospital, and a five-year-old girl was found in a pit on the same day, according to police spokesperson Nafiu Habib.

Police in Bauchi State, Nigeria, have arrested two suspects after two children died in separate incidents in Alkaleri and Ganjuwa, its spokesperson, Nafiu Habib, said on Monday. The investigations have been transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department, according to police.

In Kwaimawa village, a boy reportedly drank a beverage given to him on 16 October by his stepmother, 23-year-old Fatima Ibrahim. After he began vomiting, he was taken to a local health centre and then transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe. He died on 24 October, after eight days of treatment. Police arrested his stepmother after a report from the village head.

In a separate case, the body of a five-year-old girl was found on 24 October in a water-filled pit in Badaromo. Her grandfather had reported her missing the previous evening. Residents began searching, and police arrested 19-year-old Sadiku Musa in connection with her death.

The state’s police commissioner, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, offered his condolences to the families and promised that police would seek justice for both children, identified as Habiba and Mubarak.
