Ghanaian MP Kingsley Agyemang says country is poorly prepared for Ebola

Ghanaian MP Kingsley Agyemang believes the country remains inadequately prepared to contain a possible Ebola outbreak, particularly because health surveillance at the borders is too limited. He called for stronger checks and public awareness amid frequent exchanges with Nigeria, according to MyJoyOnline.

Ghanaian MP Kingsley Agyemang, a member of Parliament’s Health Committee, says Ghana is not adequately prepared to contain a possible Ebola outbreak. He criticised gaps in health surveillance at the borders and public information during Joy News’ PM Express programme on Monday, 26 October.

Agyemang highlighted the high volume of trade and travel between Ghana and Nigeria, which could facilitate the spread of an infection. He called for stronger surveillance at points of entry and a coordinated public health response. He also called for greater investment in disease detection, emergency preparedness and the capacity of health facilities, drawing lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The MP said he had raised the issue as early as March. Ghana announced in recent days that it was stepping up checks and screening for Ebola, particularly at its airports, according to articles published on 21 October and 22 October.
